The first development of the bicycle known as the “boneshaker” took place in France during the 1860s. This early model of bicycle was first commercially produced by the Michaux Company between 1867 and 1869.
Made primarily of wood and metal, these bicycles were notorious for their rough ride, giving rise to the nickname “boneshaker.” Very few original examples of boneshakers exist today, as most were melted down for scrap metal during World War I.
Despite their rarity, these early bicycles represent an important step in the evolution of personal mechanized transport.
